Local attractions in Basingstoke

Basingstoke has delightful mix of historic buildings and modern shops. Just some of the local attractions include the following:

Haymarket Theatre
Haymarket Theatre, North Hampshire’s award winning producing theatre, is within a few minutes walk.
Reopened in autumn 2007 after significant refurbishment, including the creation of ‘The Exchange’ performance space in the lower bar area, The Haymarket is now under the management of the Anvil Trust.

With a varied programme of theatre, drama and dance, there have never been more opportunities for great nights out in Basingstoke.

The Anvil Theatre
The Anvil is a theatre and performing arts centre, just a few minutes walk from The Red Lion, great for live music and shows.

Built on a site originally set aside for the third phase of Basingstoke’s shopping centre, The Anvil was built to tackle what was then seen as a ‘cultural desert’ in the Basingstoke area.

The aim of the project was to raise the profile of the Borough and to establish it as a major regional centre with a range of first class facilities. The building’s name reflects it’s unusual shape, particularly when seen from the western approach which somewhat resembles the horn end of a traditional blacksmith’s anvil.

Milestones Living History Museum
Milestones Museum of Living History is made up of a network of streets that have been recreated according to those found in Victorian and 1930s Hampshire.

Bringing the past to life, the museum is home to over 20,000 objects either made or used in Hampshire, and is a record of the county’s social, industrial and transport history.

Visitors can literally take a trip back in time, with a walk through the late 1800s and 1900s streets equipped with shops, factories, a garage, houses, vintage vehicles, a Romany encampment and a Victorian showground – and don’t miss the Baverstoke Arms working pub! The museum is suitable for all ages, with plenty to keep the whole family occupied.

Festival Place
With over 200 shops, 30 restaurants, cafes, bars, a multi screen cinema, sports centre, Discovery Centre and nightclub there are loads of places at Festival Place to enjoy both day and night.

Festival Place is Hampshire’s regional shopping destination, located in the heart of Basingstoke town centre. Easy to get to just across the car park from the Red Lion Hotel.

The new indoor skiing and skydiving facility with driving and surfing simulators all just over a mile from the Red Lion Hotel, Basingstoke.

Wellington Country Park
A wonderful place for walking and a great day out with nature trails, set in 350 acres of beautiful parklands surrounding a 35 acre lake.
